EDMONTON, Alberta _ Tomas Hertl secured two points for the San Jose Sharks with his second goal of the game, but the Sharks may have lost Joonas Donskoi in the process.
Hertl clinched a 4-3 overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers at 3:40 of the extra session Wednesday, firing a pass from Logan Couture inside the near post.
Donskoi left the game with an apparent shoulder injury late in the third period, slamming his stick before he went up the tunnel after being driven into the boards by defenseman Ethan Bear. The Finnish forward recorded just 17 points in 61 games last season while fighting through a pair of shoulder injuries. He experienced a resurgence after the Sharks acquired Evander Kane last month, scoring six points in seven games since the trade.
Despite Donskoi's injury, the Sharks gained a three-point lead over the Los Angeles Kings for second place in the Pacific Division with the win.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead at 1:26 of the third, redirecting an Oscar Klefbom blast from the point in the slot. Brenden Dillon tied the game at 9:05 of the final stanza, steering the puck into the top-left corner through traffic off a pass from Mikkel Boedker.
The Oilers opened the scoring at 2:39 of the first when Drake Caggiula punched in a pass from the side of the net that Zack Kassian fed to him from below the goal line.
The Sharks tied the game later in the period when Leon Draisaitl gave them a freebie with a sloppy offensive zone turnover. Draisaitl put the puck on the tape of Boedker's stick by attempting a cross-ice pass just inside the blue line as defenseman Bear was racing toward the net. The turnover led to a three on one that Tomas Hertl converted into his 17th goal at 8:03 on a feed from Logan Couture.
Martin Jones allowed the Sharks to escape the first in a 1-1 tie, making 12 saves on 13 shots as the Oilers produced several grade-A scoring chances. He stopped Nugent Hopkins on a breakaway just 57 seconds into the game, and shortly after, he made a pad save on Draisaitl, who received an open look from the right circle after a turnover by Hertl.
After they survived the first, the Sharks grabbed the momentum in the middle frame, outshooting the Oilers 19-7 by establishing a strong forecheck and working the puck down low. Still, they entered the second intermission in a tie game.
Klefbom put the Oilers ahead 2-1 at 7:44 of the second, scoring off a blast from the right point. Head coach Pete DeBoer challenged the goal on the basis of goaltender interference because Aberg's skate made slight contact Jones' skate in the crease, but the call on the ice stood after a video review.
The Sharks tied the game on the power play 2:15 later when Couture, who recorded three points, scored his team-leading 28th goal by ripping in a shot from the left circle with Brent Burns and Joe Pavelski earning assists. Couture's 207th career goal moved him past Owen Nolan on the Sharks' all-time goals list into fourth place behind Patrick Marleau (508), Pavelski (313) and Joe Thornton (228).
The power play goal marked the first time the Sharks have scored with the man advantage in back-to-back games since Jan. 21 and Jan. 23. The Sharks power play, which snapped out of an 0 for 29 funk last week, is now 3 for 10 over its last four games.
