Sharks lose to Coyotes in overtime, 3-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. _ A third-period comeback helped the Sharks salvage a point to end their six-game road trip.

Third period goals by Joe Pavelski and Tommy Wingels tied Saturday's game with Arizona, but Martin Hanzal scored 1:16 into overtime to give the Coyotes a 3-2 win.

The Sharks finished the trip with a 2-3-1 record, beating Washington, Florida and Tampa Bay, but losing to Carolina on Tuesday and St. Louis on Thursday.

The Sharks weren't getting rewarded for all of the shots they were putting towards the Coyotes net in the first two periods, but they saw dividends in the third thanks to a couple of redirected shots.

Pavelski's goal came just 41 seconds into the third period, as he tipped a Justin Braun shot past Mike Smith to cut the Coyotes lead to 2-1.

With 9:32 to go in the third, Chris Tierney won a faceoff and the puck came to Matt Nieto, whose shot from just above the circles was tipped by Wingels past Smith for his fourth of the season.

The Sharks peppered Smith with 27 shots in the first two periods, as they were playing their first game of the season without center Tomas Hertl, who suffered a lower-body injury on Thursday.

Sharks coach Pete DeBoer said Saturday afternoon that early reports on Hertl haven't revealed anything concrete as far as the extent of the 23-year-old's lower body injury.

Asked if early reports are encouraging or discouraging, DeBoer said, "Kind of down the middle."

"Anytime you have an issue it's whether it's serious enough that you need surgery or you don't need surgery," DeBoer added. "That's what it is. That's the process they're going through."

Hertl flew back to San Jose on Friday and was scheduled to have an MRI after he suffered the injury _ possibly to his troubled right knee.

If Hertl were to need surgery, it would be his second in less than three years. As a rookie, Hertl needed an operation on Dec. 31, 2013 to repair ligaments two weeks after a knee-to-knee collision with Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings.

Hertl also suffered a right knee injury on June 1 during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final after absorbing a hit from Patric Hornqvist of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He missed the rest of the final and spent most of the offseason in rehabilitation.

Hertl appeared to be injured on a collision with Blues forward Jori Lehtera with 4:51 to go in the second period of Thursday's game.

The Sharks fell behind 2-0 after two periods.

Just 25 seconds after Brenden Dillon was sent off for tripping Tobias Rieder, Max Domi beat Sharks goalie Martin Jones with a wrist shot to the short side for a two-goal Arizona lead.

The one miscue the Sharks made in an otherwise dominant first period wound up in the back of their net.

Paul Martin couldn't control the puck after he had pinched inside the Coyotes' blue line. Jordan Martinook tipped it past Joonas Donskoi to the other end of the ice, gathered it and fed Rieder, who tapped it past Jones for a 1-0 Coyotes lead just 1:55 into the first period.

Just two seconds after Rieder's goal, Sharks winger Micheal Haley, played for the first time since Nov. 5, fought Ryan White in an entertaining tilt.

The Sharks seemed to make a more concerted effort to get all the pucks they could on Smith, and finished the first period with a 17-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Smith, though, has always been sharp against the Sharks, entering Saturday with a 10-7-2 career record, a 2.10 goals against average and a .942 save percentage in 20 games against San Jose.
