Sharks come back to beat Maple Leafs in shootout, 3-2

TORONTO _ The Sharks came alive with two goals late in the third period then had Logan Couture score the only goal in the shootout to earn an unlikely 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at Air Canada Centre.

Martin Jones made 29 saves, including two stops in overtime, and saved shots by Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and Nikita Soshnikov in the shootout to cap the win for the Sharks, who still haven't lost in Toronto since 2002.

Matthews had a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who had a 2-0 lead after two periods.

Justin Braun scored his first of the season with 7:17 to go in the third period to give the Sharks some life as they cut the Maple Leafs' lead to one. Just 2:07 later with the Sharks on their sixth power play, Joe Pavelski tied the game 2-2 as he tipped a shot from the blue line from Brent Burns for his ninth of the season.

The Sharks went 0-for-4 on the power play in the first two periods but also had trouble building momentum at even strength and establishing a forecheck. They managed just 13 shots at even strength through the first two periods, and perhaps their best scoring chance overall through 40 minutes came shorthanded.

The Sharks were without Marc Edouard Vlasic, who was scratched for the first time this season as he continued to recover from a lower body injury he suffered Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

David Schlemko, back in the lineup after missing three games with his own lower-body injury, took Vlasic's spot on the Sharks' first defense pair with Braun. Dylan DeMelo, playing his fourth straight game, was on the third pair with Brenden Dillon.

Matthews got free near the faceoff dot to the right of Jones to help set up the Maple Leafs' first goal.

Matthews, Toronto's first overall draft pick in June, took a pass from William Nylander and put a shot on net that was tipped in front by Zach Hyman past Jones for a 1-0 Leafs lead.

Matthews then made it 2-0 at the 7:46 mark of the second period.

With the Leafs on a 5-on-3 after penalties to Tommy Wingels and Matt Nieto three seconds apart, Matthews took a pass from Nylander at the side of the Sharks goal and slid it under Jones for his 13th goal of the season.

The Sharks had 11 shots on goal on their first four tries with the man advantage but couldn't solve Andersen, who had 26 saves through the first two periods.
