Shark takes 11ins bite out of swimmer's leg as he fights for life after horror attack

A swimmer is fighting for his life in hospital after a shark took an 11-inch bite out of his leg at a popular river spot.

The victim - named as Cameron Wrathall - was taking a morning dip with a friend on Wednesday when the attack took place.

A two to three metre-long bull shark is likely responsible for the bite, officials say.

Mr Wrathall, in his 50s, was swimming in the Swan River in Perth, Australia when his upper leg was chomped into.

He was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) where he underwent surgery and is now in a critical but stable condition, according to reports.

Kayaker Kieron Hayter told Nine News that he helped the victim to the shore.

He said: "There was a fair bit of blood in the water and the bite...was wrapped right at the top of his thigh. Was a pretty decent bite."

Perth and its coastline is renowned for great white sharks and has had several attacks.

Some beaches have been closed in recent weeks due to an increase in shark sightings.

But attacks in the city's rivers are rare, with the last taking place in 1969. The last fatal incident was nearly a century ago in 1923

The area where Mr Wrathall was attacked is closed to the public until Friday, authorities said.

RPH did not immediately return requests for comment.

The attack in Australia comes just a week after a fatal incident across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand.

Kaelah Marlow, 19, was taken out of the water still alive after being mauled by a shark but died at the scene.

The attack happened at tourist hotspot Waihi Beach on the country's North Island, not far from the city of Auckland.

Police said it appeared as if the teenager's leg had been injured by shark.

The species has not been identified by experts, although reports suggest it was a pointer shark - otherwise known as a great white.

Eyewitnesses said that the young woman had been swimming right in front of the lifeguard flags on Thursday, January 7.

They then heard screams and lifeguards went out by boat immediately and pulled her to shore.

Paramedics tried in vain to provide "vigorous" CPR but Miss Marlow was pronounced dead shortly after.

The teenager's aunt Kylie French told The West Australian their entire family was "in shock".

She said: "We can’t get over there, mum can’t get over there.

"You hear about shark attacks but never in a million years do you think it’ll be someone you know.

"She was a lovely girl, a fun girl, always bubbly, into anything."

Shark attacks are unusual in the country Miss Marlow's death is thought to be the first fatality since 2013.
