Warning issued after large white shark bites fisherman's swim fin off Perth coast

A white shark thought to be about 4.5 metres long has bitten a diver's swimming fin about two kilometres off Burns Beach, in Perth's northern suburbs, after swimming around the man's boat for several minutes.

The diver, who was spearfishing in the area at the time, lost the fin but was not injured, according to authorities.

The man was diving from a boat with two friends about 100 metres from the northern boundary of the Marmion Marine Park when they saw the shark on Saturday morning.

The shark was spotted several times, the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said.

"It was with one of the divers for up to five minutes and bit the diver's fin, which the diver lost," the department said.

"There were no injuries sustained."

A shark warning has been issued for the Burns Beach area.

Surf Life Saving WA flew over the area but did not see the shark.

Burns Beach, about 34 kilometres north of Perth, is a popular recreation spot for swimmers, fishers and walkers.
