Shark attack victim Justine Barwick back on her feet learning to walk again

Justine Barwick, pictured with her husband Craig, is still recovering in hospital from the attack.

Nine days after being bitten by at tiger shark in the Whitsundays, Tasmanian woman Justine Barwick begins learning to walk again.

Ms Barwick, 46, was attacked while on holiday at the Queensland tourist destination last week, sustaining severe injuries to her right thigh.

She is recovering at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, where she had reconstructive surgery, and is now able to get out of bed and walk with help from her physiotherapist.

"I am learning to walk again but there are many hours of physio and occupational therapy sessions in my future," Ms Barwick said in a message to her work colleagues at Family Based Care.

"I think I am up to the task! Please be patient with me as I undertake this work."

"Day two of getting out bed and physio is progressing as well as can be expected," said her husband Craig in a statement.

"Today in her walk to the chair Justine did a 10-metre return trip on her own two legs with assistance from the physiotherapist."

Family Based Care CEO Douglass Doherty called on his staff to donate blood, reminding them of the lifesaving role blood transfusions played in Ms Barwick's recovery.

Ms Barwick was swimming off a charter yacht in Cid Harbour at Whitsunday Island last Wednesday when the attack happened.

She was pulled onto a yacht that luckily had an emergency doctor aboard before she was put in a dinghy and airlifted to hospital.

After becoming fully conscious on Monday, her first words to her husband were: "Sorry I have caused so much trouble."

A 12-year-old girl, Hannah Papps, was attacked by a shark in Cid Harbour the next day.

Since the attacks a number of sharks have been culled, angering some marine conservation groups.
