Shark attack leaves boy, 13, with two gaping wounds needing 19 stitches

A teenage boy was left with two gaping wounds in his foot that required 19 stitches after a horror shark attack.

Logan Radd, 13, had been paddling in the sea in Florida, US, on Tuesday when he felt something strange on his foot.

"I was coming in and he bit my foot and then he bit it again. It was probably a 2-foot shark," the keen surfer said.

He was left with two huge cuts on the heel of his left foot after the ordeal, which happened at around 4.30pm.

His mum, Jennifer Radd, rushed her son to hospital after seeing him jerk his foot from the water and noticing a black-tipped shark nearby.

"He just told me, 'Mommy, don't cry," she told Florida Today.

"He was so brave, just telling me he was going to be OK. The bites looked pretty gnarly and got him 19 stitches. He wasn't in pain until about 2:30 a.m. It's just the worst thing a mother could go through."

The horror attack, which happened after Logan had been at the beach surfing with his coach and family, was the first reported shark bite of the year at Brevard County beach.

The creatures often cruise along the state's shoreline.

Brevard County Ocean Lifeguard chief Eisen Witcher said: "From our standpoint, we have not had any shark-related incidents in the guarded areas.”

"It's been pretty quiet."

In 2018, the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack file reported 66 shark attacks, 32 of which were in the United States.

Half of these took place in Florida - with four off the same county's coast.

Logan, who travels to participate in surfing contests, recently finished third while representing the Central Florida surf team.

He hasn't been deterred by the incident, and told the local newspaper that he will be back in the water as soon as his stitches are out.
