Lake Macquarie City Council has reopened Redhead Beach to the public after a third shark sighting in two days.
During the closure, council said the beach would remain closed while lifeguards monitored the situation and that this was a standard procedure following a detection.
Council also closed the beach a couple of times on Thursday due to shark activity.
From about 10.12am to 11.20am, beachgoers were not able to approach the water.
At about 3.15pm, council closed the beach again after the shark returned to the area.
Following a shark sighting or detection from an ocean tracker, lifeguards assess the initial report, launch on-water investigations, and close the beach if sighting is confirmed.
If necessary, lifeguards will attempt to move the shark further off shore.
If there is no further sighting, they will consider reopening the beach to the public and keep an eye on the area.
