The news that Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her flat in north London at the age of 27 feels wholly shocking despite a seeming grim inevitability: for years, talk of her talent had been eclipsed by endless stories of drink and drug abuse, and her on-off relationship with husband Blake Fielder-Civil.
At this moment, however, it's her sassy charm from when she first burst on the scene - as Garry Mulholland captured in an interview for the Observer in 2004 - that comes to mind, and then of course her brilliance as a performer: first with the captivating Frank, in 2003, on which she sounded older, magically, than her years, bringing to mind not only great pop singers but fabled jazz and blues performers; and then with the global smash that was Back In Black three years later.
