Vigils are being held across the US following days of violence in which five police officers were killed in Texas, and two black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were killed in separate police shootings.
The most recent shootings took place at an anti-violence rally in Dallas – one of a number being held across the country – in response to the fatal police shootings earlier in the week.
Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings and police chief David Brown emphasised that the protest was peaceful until the shooting occurred. Brown asked people to pray for the families who lost loved ones, including the five police officers shot and killed in the attack: “Please, we need your support to be able to protect you from men like these, who carried out this tragic, tragic event. Pray for these families”.
