On 1 November 1929, the Manchester Guardian launched three Christmas competitions, one of which was a drawing contest in which children were invited to send in sketches of their parents. Fathers and Mothers ran for a month with the paper publishing the best entries each day. The pictures give a glimpse of what Guardian readers looked like 75 years ago, while one of the competition winners was a young Anthony Burgess, his entry becoming his first published piece of work.
To accompany the gallery from the Guardian archive of children’s drawings of their parents, we’d like you to share your drawings or photos or your family. Do tell us a bit about the image too, what was your memory of the day it was taken? We’ll publish the best contibutions in a gallery on the site.
Share your drawings and photos by clicking on the blue ‘Contribute’ buttons. Or if you’re out and about you can download the GuardianWitness app or look for our assignments in the new Guardian app and search for ‘GuardianWitness assignments’ – and if you add it to the homepage – you can keep up with all our assignments.
Please note you do have to be over the age of 16 to contribute and if you’re sharing a photo of children under the age of 16, please make sure they’re your own or you have permission from their parents.
- GuardianWitness is the home of content created by Guardian readers. Share your video, pictures and stories, and browse contributions submitted by others. Posts will be reviewed prior to publication on GuardianWitness, and the best pieces will feature on the Guardian site.
