A fully accessible synthetic ice skating rink has opened to the Co Fermanagh public at the Share Discovery Village in Lisnaskea.
The project was first announced earlier this month, with the activity centre opening the facility in the lead up to Christmas.
Local representatives and Share volunteers attended the official launch of the ice skating facility on Friday, alongside a number of school groups.
Commenting on the enjoyment the ice rink will bring to local families, Share Discovery Village chief executive Darragh Collins told MyFermanagh it was a significant initiative for the area.
“Our season usually runs until the end of August and in September it goes quiet, so we decided this year we were going to open into the winter,” Darragh said.
“Since July we have been working on it and thankfully today after a lot of blood, sweat and tears we are here with the local primary school from Aghadrumsee testing it out for us.
“Ice skating seems to be a very popular activity in the lead up to Christmas so people are very positive about it.
“It’s great to have the facility close by and we’ve had a lot of local bookings and school groups and youth groups interested already.
“It’s a huge addition to the area and huge addition to the Share Discovery Village, so we’re hoping everybody gets out behind us and supports it.
Founded in 1981, Share Discovery Village has grown to become Northern Ireland’s largest residential centre with more than 200 beds and 65 acres of grounds and facilities, and specifically caters for those with disabilities.
“We’re in our 40th year this year and we’ve grown from one farmhouse building to a huge 64 acre site.
“We’re going to hopefully invest in more and more activities, as what we really want is to create an experience for people here to have a real holiday village feel.”
