Finally, an exciting bulletin from the world of sport, where Shaquille O'Neal has revealed the secret of his athletic prowess: the Power Balance bracelet, which is reputed to improve balance, strength and flexibility by means of two holograms, which "optimise the body's natural energy flow". "I don't do a lot of testimonials," he said, "but this works."

Lost in Showbiz's enthusiasm for this innovation refuses to be dimmed by doubts cast on the efficacy of the $29.99 silicone band, nor by those who complain that O'Neal's eagerness to offer a testimonial may have been influenced by the fact he's paid by the manufacturer to offer testimonials. Instead, it points to what appears to be the manufacturer's bold new slogan, adopted after an investigation by Australian authorities – "We admit there is no credible scientific evidence that supports our claims" – and asks: is there a more sure-fire way of instilling confidence in your product?
