Shapeshifting drag monster who celebrates Halloween every week

By day Daniel Brownhill is a PhD student, but by night he turns into spooktacular drag monster - Athena Barbital.

Daniel first tried drag when he came to Liverpool to study, but admitted he was initially intimidated by the amount of talented queens already dominating the city.

Despite this, the 25-year-old still put 100 per cent into work and provided the scene with a fresh alternative take on drag, other than the usual glamour looks.

The Mancunian told the ECHO : "I've always had a love of costumes and crafting but didn't have an outlet for it until I discovered drag.

"My niche of drag came from exploring the history of the club kids and finding out about the show Dragula.

"I started playing around with makeup and outfits for Instagram and eventually started getting hosting jobs in bars."

After playing around with make-up and outfits for Instagram, Daniel eventually started to get hosting jobs in bars, which allowed him to grow his presence.

Daniel's drag name, Athena, is taken from the Greek goddess of wisdom, war and handicrafts. Whereas Barbital comes from the common antiepileptic medication, phenobarbital, used to control seizures.

The University of Liverpool student said: "I chose it because when I'm not a being a drag monster, I study a PhD investigating the ability of neuroimaging to predict the response of a patient with epilepsy to certain medications."

Daniel explained how when he steps into the 7-inch heels of his alter-ego, he feels confident and 'no longer worries about making a fool out of himself.'

Now, the self-proclaimed "shape-shifting cartoon creature" can be found regularly at Heaven on Victoria Street.

There you will see Athena's creepy and camp drag whilst manning the door, dancing on top of the bar and sometimes after a few too many swinging from the light fixture.

Speaking more on the type of looks you can expect to see from her, Athena added: "I like to create conceptual looks that others might not think of.

The inspiration behind this jaw-dropping look was The Devil Wears Prada movie (Daniel Brownhill)

"I have a very unique cartoon style makeup, recognisable even through all the shape-shifting.

"I make a lot of key elements of my looks myself, usually because the things that come to my mind can't just be bought anywhere."

Athena has recently expanded her wings and made appearances at alternative cabaret nights in the Baltic triangle area.

Now that she has became a familiar face to many within the LGBTQIA+ community in Liverpool, Athena plans to move on to greener pastures to other cities.
