The full version of Shape of Dreams has different characters, and some are definitely better than the rest.
Given the genre of the game, failure is almost guaranteed. You're bound to die, and the key is to get as many upgrades as possible (to go deeper on your run). That said, picking a more effective character (irrespective of the skills you get) is necessary.
This guide will help you understand how the characters currently rank in the meta.

Complete Shape of Dreams Travelers tier list
Every Traveler in Shape of Dreams feels unique regarding their playstyles and kits. I have used three tiers to separate them.
- S-tier characters are the best choices you can make. They're relatively easy to play, their kits are highly effective, and the average run length with them will be longer.
- A-tier travelers are slightly off the top (they might be somewhat challenging to learn, or their kits might be hard to execute without proper abilities).
- B-tier travelers are niche choices who have limited use-case scenarios.

S-tier
- Aurena: Aurena is A-tier in solo play, but she's a must-have when playing with others. Her healing abilities use her health to cast different skills. She can do a lot of damage and also consistently heal her allies. A good Aurena will ensure survivability for the entire team (the scope of heals declines massively in solo play).
- Bismuth: The powerful mage has one of the best DPS potentials in the game. Her floating book allows her to perform basic attacks and gain speed with her dashes. Her kit will also enable her to control the battlefield by slowing down the enemies. Bismuth is a glass cannon early in the game, so keep your distance.
- Vesper: Arguably the easiest Traveler to learn, Vesper is the perfect "in-your-face" character to use. His melee kit is easy to master and has self-heals to sustain the damage over time. The focus is to improve his attack speed, since mobility (or lack of it) is a bummer.
A-tier
- Lacerta: I like Lacerta and how easy she is to master. She has dodges to escape hard spots, a good gun, and guaranteed critical shots that do explosive damage. Setting the enemy on fire also enhances her damage. She would have been S-tier, but requires many things to go right on the run for that.
- Mist: This character is a unique blend of offense and defense. Her passive gains her speed, and hitting fresh enemies gets her a temporary shield. The shield also makes it easier for her to lunge across enemies, aiding her mobility. The skill ceiling is slightly higher with her, as you must consistently land the shots.
- Nachia: If Vesper isn't your cup of tea but you want to go the melee way, Nachia is an excellent alternative. She has self-healing and can buff up her attacks with crit when her HP is below a certain threshold. This makes her slightly tricky for beginners.
B-tier
- Shell: While I am yet to play much with Shell, the kit feels extremely limited. Barring specific situations that arise rarely, there are better alternatives to him in every role.
- Yubar: While this mage has an amazing passive, good escapability, and AoE potential, his base health is low. He also has one dodge, adding to the difficulties. Unless you know what you are doing on the battlefield, it's better to skip Yubar.
