Shannon Sharpe says Broncos should go after Cam Newton in 2020

During a recent appearance on “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe said on FS1 that Denver Broncos general manager John Elway should pursue Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton — if he becomes available.

The trade deadline for the 2019 season has already passed but Carolina might be willing to part ways with Newton in 2020. Newton was placed on injured reserve earlier this week and his time with the Panthers might be coming to an end. If the QB becomes available next year, Sharpe thinks the Broncos, Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears should go after him.

“He’s better than [Ryan] Tannehill, he’s better than [Marcus] Mariota, he’s better than [Joe] Flacco — he’s better than what they got in Denver — he’s better than [Mitch] Trubisky and Chase Daniel. There are three teams right there that if Cam Newton is on the open market, they should be first in line.

“Hell, I’d call John Elway in Denver who’s running [the team]. ‘Hey, bro, look at Cam.'”

Newton, 30, has completed 59.6 percent of his passes in his career for 29,041 yards with 182 touchdowns against 108 interceptions. He has also rushed for 4,806 yards and 58 touchdowns. Newton was named NFL MVP following the 2015 season and lost to the Broncos 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.
