Shannon Airport reopens after earlier plane fire

Shannon Airport has reopened ( Shannon Airport )

Shannon Airport has reopened after a military jet caught fire during take-off.

Flights were suspended this morning as the airport worked to remove the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300 Omni Air jet, from the runway.

The plane was used to transport US military troops.

Air traffic controllers noticed smoke belching from the jet while it was taxiing on the runway, reported the Irish Times.

Emergency services were called to the scene, the airport said in a tweet.

The jet was safely evacuated, according to Omni Air, and no serious injuries were reported.

The Irish airport said the aircraft had been removed from the runway and plans to resume the flight schedule were underway. Delays should be expected throughout the day, it said.

Shannon Airport advised passengers to contact their airlines for flight updates before travel.
