Shankill Road event highlights importance of listening to young people

The views of young people must be at the forefront of future planning, a youth worker has said.

The Ur Journey Ur Voice conference took place over two days at the Spectrum Centre on the Shankill Road.

Key community figures spoke while an evening event brought over 300 young people together.

Sarah Jane Waite, from Ur Journey Ur Voice, told Belfast Live: "It is an opportunity for youth work staff, community workers and young people to have a say in the development of a strategy over how we work with and for young people in the Greater Shankill over the next ten years.

"We had keynote speakers, from health development to suicide awareness we looked at a range of issues that were highlighted by young people in a consultation in the run up to Christmas.

"It's important that young people are involved in the discussion. There's nothing worse than creating a plan for a community on how we work with and for young people if they are not involved.

"If we're not responding to where they're at and what their needs are then really we are on the wrong track."
