Shankill Road Christmas tree lights to be switched on by world's strongest man Tom Stoltman this week

It's that time of the year again, as the Shankill Road Christmas tree switch-on event is to take place this week.

The popular event first took place nine years ago and is an annual tradition for many families in the area at the start of the festive season.

This year, the area's Christmas tree lights will be switched on by the world's strongest man, Tom Stoltman, on Friday, December 3.

The event starts with a funfair in the Co-Op car park at 6pm, before a festive parade will take place from the Shankill Leisure Centre car park at 7pm.

Kids can pick up a free Christmas light wand and join the parade behind the famous funky float and raving Santa, before enjoying live entertainment on stage.

The Christmas lights will be switched on by strongman Tom Stoltman at around 7.30pm.

The event is run by the Greater Shankill Winter Festival in partnership with the ACT Initiative.

Steven Pollock from the ACT Initiative told Belfast Live: "We're able to have the event better than we did last year but still not to the extent we had in previous years due to covid.

"This is the ninth year now we've been running it and it just gets better every year. It's great to see it's taken on a life of its own.

"We had a virtual switch on last year but it just wasn't the same. People like to get out there and see the tree lights being turned on, and experience the whole atmosphere and getting into the Christmas spirit.

"This year we're hoping we'll be able to bring that back for everyone. It's an outdoor event, people can spread out and stay as far away from others as they wish, to enjoy themselves safely."
