In a milestone event marking start of a new culinary era in Chiang Mai, the Shangri-La Hotel will host Italian Michelin-star chef Alfonso Caputo for an exclusive four-day residency.
The event, which runs 7 to 10 December 2017, is the first of a series of epicurean events organised by Shangri-La aimed at boosting the hotel’s standing in the local fine dining scene, and helping to make Chiang Mai a world-class gastronomic destination.
A third-generation practitioner of the culinary arts, Chef Alfonso currently runs the kitchen the revered La Taverna del Capitano restaurant in the Napoli region, along the picturesque Amalfi Coast. Founded by his grandfather—after whom Chef Alfonso is named—La Taverna del Capitano has been enthralling diners since the 1920’s.
His considerable experience includes an early stint under legendary chef Gualtiero Marchesi—who is widely held as the father of modern Italian cuisine. After traveling to France and Japan to widen his world outlook, Chef Alfonso eventually took over running Taverna del Capitano from his father—an accomplished chef in his own right. In 1993 the younger Alfonso was accepted as a member of the prestigious Association of Jeunes Restaurateurs d’Europe, an organisation dedicated to supporting talented up-and-coming chefs and to preserving the heritage European haute cuisine.

Chef Alfonso will recreate some of most popular dishes from the menu of Taverna del Capitano, using a meticulously curated list of imported ingredients, masterfully mingled with premium local produce.
This event will give Chiang Mai diners a rare chance to experience the unique and truly authentic Italian culinary traditions that were more than nine decades and three generations in the making.
