Shanghai’s Top Cop Falls Under Party Investigation

What’s new: Gong Daoan, Shanghai’s deputy mayor and head of the city’s public security bureau, has been placed under investigation for “serious violations of discipline and law,” the Communist Party’s central commission for discipline inspection announced in a statement (link in Chinese) on Tuesday.

Gong is the first high-ranking official to fall under investigation in Shanghai since the 19th Communist Party Congress in 2017. His last public appearance was at a video and telephone conference held by the State Council, China’s cabinet, on production safety issues on July 31, according to Shanghai’s Jiefang Daily, a Communist Party publication.

The background: Gong, 55, is the third senior police officer to be disciplined as part of the country’s anti-corruption campaign within a year, following Sun Lijun, former deputy minister for public security, and Deng Huilin, top police officer in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing.
