Shanghai GAA return to training as China emerges from Covid-19 shutdown

The majority of GAA clubs may have a long time to wait yet for a return to action - but in China, Shanghai GAA are back training.

The club posted a group photo from training last week on Instagram as life gets returns to normality in the Chinese city, with the message: "First training of the season down- thanks to everyone for coming out (in body and spirit)! Nice to see all those beauty faces!  #shanghaigaa "

Shanghai is one member of the growing Asian GAA community under the Asian County Board and the club takes part in the All-China games annually.

Shanghai GAA was founded in 2001 and has over 150 adult players along with underage teams.

With Covid-19 restrictions being eased in the city, the club along with LeCheile (an Irish Online community group in Shanghai), The Irish Chamber of Commerce China and Friends of Northern Ireland with support from the Irish Consulate has managed to raise €29,000 for charities.

Measures such as widespread temperature checks, facemasks and enforced quarantine for people arriving from abroad have helped curb the spread of the virus that broke out in Wuhan in January.

In Ireland, it appears there is still a long way to go before organised sport returns at any level.

Minister for Health Simon Harris has all but ruled out inter-county GAA matches taking place in 2020 in the absence of effective treatment or a vaccine for the coronavirus.

"It's highly unlikely we're going to be seeing very large kinds of mass gatherings this year," he told the Sunday Independent.

"Could you get to a point where you can’t have massive GAA matches, but you could have local kids having a kickabout safely? That’s the sort of space that we’re in, that we need to work our way through.

"What's not going to come back quickly are scenarios in which we can’t safely socially distance."
