The star of Marvel’s first film fronted by Asian superhero says it was “an incredible honour” to lead the movie.

Actor Simu Liu stars in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which had its premiere in Hollywood on Monday night.

Liu attended the star-studded red carpet with co-star Meng’er Zhang in Los Angeles.

Liu said: “We have not one, not two, not three, not four but like many incredible Asian badass heroes, three-dimensional characters... This is so important.”

Sir Ben Kingsley was also at the premiere with wife Daniela Lavender leading to speculation he will reprise his role as Trevor Slatterly from Iron Man 3.

The film will be released in cinemas only next month, a break from Disney’s recent stratgey of releasing theatrically and on its streaming service.

That practice has been criticised by some and resulted in legal action from Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson over alleged loss of earnings.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said of the new film’s cinema-only release: “That’s the way these movies are meant to be seen, on the big screen.”
