Shane Ross wants public wearing face masks on Luas, trains and buses

Shane Ross wants us wearing facemasks on buses, trains and the Luas from next Monday.

The Minister for Transport told the Dáil that it looks like “people will be asked to use coverings” on our public transport network.

He said that it is probable they will be “allowed and encouraged.”

And the clock is ticking to buy masks or make our own as Mr Ross said the new normal for commuters could be with us in just four days’ time.

The final recommendation will come from NPHET (National Public Health Emergency Team) tomorrow morning.

The Dáil was sitting yesterday to provide an opportunity for TDs to question ministers on the actions being taken to tackle coronavirus in their department.

Minister Ross was there fielding transport questions, with Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan and Minister for Education, Joe McHugh, also taking centre stage.

Mr Ross said during Questions to the Minister for Transport: “Dr Tony Holohan addressed the issue of masks, which the Deputy (TD) raised, yesterday.

“He said that he will make a recommendation by the end of the week.

“It looks that people will be asked to use coverings on public transport.

“They do not like to say ‘masks’ as this word is rather clinical.

“It may be recommended that coverings be allowed and encouraged in places such as on public transport and in supermarkets.

“There would be positives and negatives to such a recommendation but guidance is needed.

“There will continue to be social distancing.

“That particular issue must be monitored very carefully because we do not know what demand will be like next week.

“It is very difficult to know whether people will be reluctant to go on buses or whether they will move to their private cars.

“It is being monitored very closely.

“We are very confident about phase one.

“Phase two is coming a few weeks later and adjustments will be made accordingly.”
