New Wexford football manager Shane Roche admits it’s been a “whirlwind couple of days”.
The Geraldine O’Hanrahan’s clubman has taken his first county job after the decision of Paul Galvin to depart the Model role.
Roche, a selector under Galvin’s short tenure, held a meet and greet last night with the players and new management. His selectors are Philip Wallace (Gusserane O’Rahilly’s) and Anthony Masterson (Castletown) while former Kerry star Donnchadh Walsh, now based in Dublin, is one of his physios.
“It has been a whirlwind couple of days for me, trying to get a backroom team together, and also making contact with the squad. Our time is limited so it was a case of getting up and running quickly,” said Roche, with a return to Allianz League action now a month away. “We have not much time to prepare for Limerick but it’s fantastic to be given this opportunity.
“It will be brilliant to be back. The buzz and energy that will bring, it will be fantastic. We realise the club championship is still to be played out so there will be every cooperation with the clubs over the next couple of weeks. That’s very important given the stage of the club championship,.
“The squad is open, this is a fresh start for everyone, so it’s up to the players should they put their hand up,’ Roche said. “Our aim will be to try and gain promotion from Division 4 which would set us up for the provincial championship meeting with Wicklow. We’ll take it a game at a time but it’s hugely important we get a result against Limerick which would be a huge lift.”
