Shane O'Brien to be appointed Westmeath hurling manager

Shane O'Brien is to be appointed as the next Westmeath senior hurling manager at next week’s county board meeting.

O’Brien will replace Joe Quaid, who was surprisingly ousted by the county board in July, having been part of his backroom team this year.

Joining the set up will be Dublin-based Paudie O’Neill, who was previously involved with Eamon O’Shea’s management team in his native Tipperary, as “director of coaching”, along with former Galway dual player Alan Kerins in a “coaching and performance role”, according to a county board statement.

Brendan Murtagh will remain as a selector having fulfilled a similar role under Quaid this year.

Dubliner O’Brien was previously involved with Quaid in Kildare when they won the Christy Ring Cup last year and has managed the Dublin camogie team.

He will be tasked with consolidating Westmeath’s place in the top flight of the League and winning the Joe McDonagh Cup having been beaten in the final in each of the last two seasons.
