Westmeath are on the lookout for a new senior hurling manager after Shane O’Brien stepped down.
The Dubliner has vacated the post after two years despite having guided the team to the Joe McDonagh Cup and a place in the Championship’s top tier next year after victory over Kerry last month.
His last game in charge was the subsequent League relegation play-off defeat against Laois, which saw Westmeath drop to Division 2A in 2022.
In all, O’Brien spent three years with Westmeath having been coach under Joe Quaid for the 2019 season and county board chairman Frank Mescall said that he had “brought a level of professionalism to our senior hurling team”.
In a statement, O’Brien said: “I would like to thank the incredible group of players that I was so blessed to have worked with over the last three years.
“It was a journey that had much excitement and fulfilling memories in challenging and unprecedented times. I am fully aware of how fortunate I was to have worked with such a fantastic team. The players have shown immense courage and passion in Division One over the last two years, which ultimately led to Westmeath winning the much sought after Joe McDonagh Cup.
“I would like to thank the management and backroom team for their unwavering support and commitment and the clubs, supporters, Club Iarmhi and Westmeath county board.
“Westmeath hurling is in a very strong position and I look forward to seeing their continued development in the coming years.”
