Shane MacGowan's biographer struggled to write book as singer watches TV all day

The biographer writing a new book about Shane MacGowan has told of the difficulties he faced interviewing the singer - because he watches TV non-stop.

The Pogues lead singer was interviewed in his Dublin apartment several times by author Richard Balls.

The 61-year-old has been confined to a wheelchair after suffering a broken pelvis in a freak fall in 2015.

However, the Fairytale of New York singer 's mobility issues didn't affect Richard's efforts to gather information as much as his TV habit.

He said: "Getting stuff out of Shane is hard, not because he doesn’t want to co-operate but because he’s in a wheel chair and watches TV all day with the volume up loud. But he’s always listening and coming back to me.”

He told the Irish Sun: “Shane can’t walk so I’m always there to help. I’ve put Shane to bed, I’ve dressed him, I’ve made him drinks but mostly I’ve listened.

“He is such a clever, insightful person, and it’s a privilege to hang out with Shane, doing what most fans would cut off their right arm to do.”

The longtime Pogues fan was approached to write Shane’s story by his sister Siobhan and best friend Paul Ronan.

The book, which hasn't been titled yet, is to be published next year by UK company Omnibus Press.
