Shane Lowry shares his Ryder Cup dream after Open heroics at Royal Portrush

Open hero Shane Lowry is still dreaming of making it into Padraig Harrington's Ryder Cup team after his Royal Portrush triumph in July.

The Offaly man has enjoyed a 'decent summer' as he celebrated with family and friends, but as he admitted that he's moving on from the success - he stressed what's next for his career.

Lowry has never competed in arguably golf's greatest tournament, but plans on battling his way into Harrington's European team for the 2020 edition of the Ryder Cup.

Speaking on the RTE Late Late Show, Lowry said: "I've said that (the Ryder Cup is the goal) all along.

"When I sat down in December with my team, my coach and my manager, and we talked about what do I want to achieve - because things were starting to look a bit brighter.

"I was starting to play decent golf and asking 'what do I need to do to?, or what do I want to focus on for the next year or two?'.

"So I was thinking like the only thing I want to do and the only thing that would make me happy is if I make the next Ryder Cup team.

"It's even more special because Padraig (Harrington) is the captain, so we planned out a schedule and I said that I needed to play as good as I can between now and September and get myself into the position where I'm in all the big tournaments.

"So I can go and play for the biggest points and the biggest prize money and try and make the team.

"So I think it's a week from now, today's Friday, today's like the first day of it next year. Hopefully I'll be in the heat of it this time next year."

Lowry is well up the pecking order for selection after the momentous victory, but will need strong performances in the 2020 mjor championships to ensure to book a seat on the plane to Whistling Straits next September.

But for now, Lowry flies to Italy for a tournament next week before jetting off to Tokyo to support the Boys in Green in the Rugby World Cup as Joe Schmidt's men aim to seal a quarter-final spot.
