Shane Lowry says Claret Jug 'is in safe hands' as he backs Open Championship cancellation

Shane Lowry will retain the Claret Jug for another year after the 2020 Open Championship was scrapped amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The tournament was scheduled for July but the R&A announced this afternoon that it will not be played this year.

In a video message, Lowry said: "Obviously like anybody else I'm very sad and disappointed that the R&A have had to cancel this year's Open Championship.

"At the end of the day, health and safety come way before any golf tournament and I'm sure the R&A have thought long and hard about this and have made their decision based on everybody's health and safety.

"You can trust me when I say the Claret Jug is going to be in safe hands for another year and I look forward to seeing you all in Royal St George's in 2021."

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour, USGA and PGA of America have decided upon new dates for this year's other three major championships.

The PGA Championship has been rescheduled until August 3-9, the US Open will be held from September 14-20 and The Masters from November 9-15.

With the Ryder Cup also set for the final weekend in September, golf fans could be in for an action-packed few months, depending how the Covid-19 pandemic plays out.
