Shane Lowry's Open triumph set to cost bookies historic sum

Shane Lowry's momentous Open Championship win is set to cost bookmakers a whopping estimated €10 million.

The Offaly man was heavily backed by Irish punters throughout the week, and after his thrilling third round that left him four clear of the field last night, he was just 1/2 to win the Claret Jug.

But before the tournament, the 32-year-old was backed by some at odds as high as 50/1 - with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power estimating that the win will cost the industry a staggering €10 million.

“Lowry had the entire nation willing him to win, us included. It’s cost us a fortune, but to see the expression on his face was priceless – and pretty much the opposite to that of the Paddy Power finance department tonight,” a spokesperson for Paddy Power said.

After getting his hands on the first major of his career, Lowry said: "What can I say? I just have so many people to thank, first of all the R&A for such a great event.

"To have an Open here on the island of Ireland and at Royal Portrush is amazing. I love this place and to be able to come here and play an Open was great.

"A lot of people in my backroom team: my coach Neil (Manchip), my caddie Bo, my management team - I definitely wouldn't be standing here without them."

Lowry fought back tears as he dedicated the win to his parents, adding: "They sacrificed so much for me when I was younger and I'm so happy that I can hand them this trophy tonight.

"My wife and my little girl, to have them here today is just extra special.

"Last but not least the volunteers and all the fans, thank you so much, this one's for you."
