Shane Lowry's grandmother getting behind Team Europe ahead of Ryder Cup

The European flag will flying high and proud in Offaly this weekend as their golfing hero Shane Lowry competes in the Ryder Cup.

The Clara native joins Rory McIlroy as the Irish contingent in Team Europe aim to help them retain their crown won in Paris back in 2018.

As Padraig Harrington's team prepare to tee it up at Whistling Straits, Lowry's grandmother Emily Scanlon was pictured beaming with pride as she wrapped a European flag around her shoulders.

In a special presentation at Esker Hills Golf Club ahead of the tournament, Scanlon was presented with the flag by Ray Molloy.

Scanlon was a viral hit two years ago as Lowry claimed his first major title with Open success at Royal Portrush.

His adoring grandmother watched on, even celebrating by downing her first glass of brandy in over a decade in his honour.

Speaking at her home in Offaly at the time, Lowry's granny said: "I drank two [glasses of brandy] yesterday, it’s nearly killing me."

And she added that the key to his success was his upbringing, saying: "He saw so much in life. He had a great upbringing.

"I remember minding him while the mother was working, he was always on the go."
