Shane Lowry's famous sporting family revealed as Irishman wins The Open

Shane Lowry is one of the most beloved sportsmen in Ireland, but he isn't the only successful athlete in his family.

Lowry's father Brendan won the All-Ireland football Championship for Offaly in 1982 after scoring three points in the final, which also featured two of the golf star's uncles.

Mick and Sean Lowry both also played in that Offaly team, their last Sam Maguire winning side to date, and were key players.

Sean scored a point as well as Offaly defeated Kerry, who had their number the previous year, 1-15 to 0-17 in a close encounter at Croke Park.

The win stopped Kerry from winning an historic five-in-a-row, which Dublin are aiming to do this year for the first time in history.

The previous year, Brendan and Sean also scored in a losing effort to Kerry in the final.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has congratulated Lowry on his Open win by sharing a throwback photo.

The Offaly man cruised to victory on Sunday to claim his first ever major, winning by six shots in the end.

McIlroy failed to make the cut after a heroic performance on Friday as he missed it by just a single shot.

Congratulating Lowry on his win, former world number one McIlroy posted on Instagram: "Even though last week wasn’t the week I had envisaged for myself, I couldn’t be happier and more proud of @shanelowrygolf.

"How he handled everything over the weekend.... emotions, nerves and conditions tells you everything I’ve gotten to know about him over the past 15 years.

"2019 Champion Golfer of the Year! Enjoy some good stuff out of the Claret Jug!"
