Shane Lowry pokes fun at Justin Thomas and gets F-word response from American in hilarious Open exchange

Shane Lowry is as well known for his warm sense of humour as his golfing class and yesterday the Offaly man couldn't resist a cheeky dig at Justin Thomas during the second round of The Open.

Lowry has been grouped with Thomas and Viktor Hovland this week at St Andrew's and while the rounds have been long and drawn out, it has not stopped the golfers from keeping their spirits high.

Indeed, many holes were proving tough even for the finest golfers around and Thomas was no different as he struck a woeful drive on 18 during Thursday's round.

The famous hole has proved difficult for many this week, however Thomas fared much better at the second time of asking and on Friday he struck a commendable drive to start with on 18.

Lowry was watching on and, having witnessed the wild attempt the day before, he couldn't resist a cheeky dig after the shot was taken.

"Most improved, anyway," Lowry quipped as Thomas watched his drive head in the right direction.

Thomas took the joke very well and his response was one of a golfer who appeared to be relieved to have conquered a tricky hole.

He replied: "Shut the f**k up!"

The pair shared a hearty laugh as they looked on.

There have been some lengthy rounds at the famous Old Course at St Andrews thus far; Lowry teed off at 3:10pm yesterday but didn't finish up until after 8pm.

He sits on four under par which is nine shots off leader Cameron Smith; both are set to tee off for round three this afternoon.

Elsewhere, Tiger Woods was emotional as he missed the cut but received a warm ovation from fans and fellow golfers alike as he walked off the St Andrew's course for what is likely to be the final time in his career.

He said: "As I walked further along the fairway, I saw Rory [McIlroy] right there.

"He gave me the tip of the cap. JT [Justin Thomas] did the same.

"It was pretty cool. The nods I was getting from guys as they were going out and I was coming in, that was pretty neat."
