Shane Lowry makes remarkable par save after driving it on the beach at PGA Championship

Shane Lowry made a remarkable par save after driving it onto the beach at the PGA Championship today.

The 608-yard par five 16th hole is a fearsome test into the wind even when finding the fairway off the tee.

But Lowry's drive went so far right that it ended up on the beach at the Kiawah Island course in South Carolina.

The 2019 Open champion was able to move it 83 yards from the sand to the fairway. Lowry joked to his caddie Bo Martin: “Got lucky there, that could’ve been a 10!"

From there he drilled a long iron to get him close enough to the green to hit a short iron to 22 feet, which he was able to hole for a remarkable par save.

Lowry is even par for the tournament through 36 holes and five shots behind 50-year-old leader Phil Mickelson who followed yesterday's 70 with a 69.
