Shane Lowry leads The Open by four shots as he breaks course record heading into final round

Shane Lowry will take a four-shot lead into final round of the The Open as he broke the course record at Royal Portrush.

The Irishman, backed by an expectant home crowd, moved to 16-under with a stunning 63 on Saturday.

He leads England's Tommy Fleetwood after carding five birdies on the back nine - and it could've been even better.

Lowry's putt on the last came agonisingly close and, had it dropped, he'd have tied the lowest-ever round in a Major.

The outstanding display puts Lowry on the brink of his first Major title and he was greeted by a raucous Irish crowd as he walked up the 18th.

Chants of "Ole ole ole" rang out as the 32-year-old from Clara finished up for the day, banishing the disappointment of Rory McIlroy missing the cut.

He led the 2016 US Open by four after three rounds but faded over the last 18 holes.

Fleetwood, meanwhile, finished on 12-under and looks best-placed to challenge Lowry on Sunday.

JB Holmes sits a further two back on 10-under, while Brooks Koepka and Justin Rose both sit on 9-under.
