Shane Lowry finishes strongly as Patrick Cantlay wins Memorial Tournament

Shane Lowry's good form continued as a final round 70 saw him finish tied sixth at the Memorial Tournament.

After bogeying three of his first four holes, the Offaly man birdied the 7th, 8th and 9th, with the latter courtesy of a spectacular hole out from 90 yards.

He then played the back nine in two under par to post a third top finish from his last four events and further boost his chances of automatically qualifying for the Ryder Cup.

Lowry will take a week off before the US Open at Torrey Pines, while his delayed defence of the Open Championship is looming next month.

Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, shot a final round 72 to finish on one under par and in a tie for 18th place. The Holywood man mixed five birdies with five bogeys.

The event was won in a playoff by Patrick Cantlay after he and fellow American Collin Morikawa finished at 13-under par. Cantlay parred the first playoff hole, the 18th hole, to win the tournament for a second time.
