Shane Lowry describes weekend of Open win as 'most unenjoyable' of his life

Shane Lowry has explained how the stress of battling for a major championship makes it difficult to enjoy until the job is done.

The 33-year-old recorded a famous win at Royal Portrush last year to claim the Claret Jug and capture his first major title.

Lowry reflected on how winning The Open led to 'incredible' celebrations in his hometown of Clare, Offaly and throughout Ireland.

But he admits that being in contention for a major on the weekend is an uncomfortable experience.

“It’s not a nice place to be,” he told The Guardian.

“It’s where you want to be as a golfer, I hope I’m in that situation again, but anyone telling you to go out and enjoy yourself? They are mad, or don’t know what they are talking about.

"It’s the most unenjoyable weekend of your life. You realise the magnitude of the whole thing.”

Lowry has said that his main aim this year is to make Padraig Harrington's Ryder Cup team, with the tournament still currently scheduled to take place this September.

The Open, which was to be held at Royal St George's this year, has been scrapped until 2021.

Lowry is determined to face off against the Americans with Europe for the first time, and won't be happy to 'live off' just one major triumph as his career moves forward.

“I’m not happy to live off the Open,” he added.

I’d love to win more. I feel very lucky and privileged to have done what I did, in that manner and where I did it. Genuinely, if it all ended today it would be decent but I’m a very driven and competitive person. I want to keep pushing on.”
