Shane Lowry crowned the RTE Sport Sportsperson of the Year

Shane Lowry was crowned the RTE Sport Sportsperson of the Year tonight to end a fairytale season.

The Offaly man lit up the summer when he reigned supreme at Royal Portrush to win the Open Championship in front of his adoring home fans.

And the popular 32-year-old's achievement saw him see off the likes of world champion boxer Katie Taylor, Dublin football captain Stephen Cluxton and gymnast Rhys McClenaghan to the individual gong.

It was Lowry's first major championship triumph and he celebrated the victory with a hero's reception on returning to his hometown of Clara.

The golfing hero was the fifth Irishman to lift the Claret jug and the career highlight also followed a victory in the Abu Dhabi Championship in January.

He succeeds rugby star Johnny Sexton in picking up the award and latest golfer to win it since Rory McIlroy took the honour in 2014 after winning two major championships.

There was compensation for gymnast McClenaghan though as he scooped the RTE Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year award.

The Down man won the award for the second successive year after creating history by becoming the first Irish gymnast to medal at the World Championships.

McClenaghan saw off competition from the likes of Ireland striker Aaron Connolly and teenage sprint sensation Rhasidat Adeleke.

Dublin GAA had much to celebrate too as their football team's dominance saw them named the RTE Sport Team of the Year.

The Dubs won an unprecedented fifth fifth All-Ireland title in-a-row with a final replay win over Kerry in September.

And Jim Gavin, who shocked the nation by stepping down last month, was celebrated with the RTE Sport Manager of the Year for guiding his county to GAA history.

The night also saw running legend Sonia O'Sullivan inducted into the RTE Sport Hall of Fame.

O'Sullivan had the nation gripped when she won a silver medal in the 5,000 metres at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney among many many achievements in an Irish singlet.
