Shane Lowry blooper as Laura Davies backs 'British when he wins' star for glory at The Open

Shane Lowry romped to the top of The Open leaderboard on Saturday with a course-record 63.

The 32-year-old now leads England's Tommy Fleetwood by four shots heading into a blockbuster final round.

Lowry, who has never won a Major, seems a popular choice among punters to lift the Claret Jug.

He's certainly being backed to the hilt among those in attendance at Royal Portrush in County Antrim - in no small part because he's an Irishman.

However, that fact appeared to be lost on golfer Laura Davies, who was co-commentating for the Sky Sports.

She backed Lowry to win the tournament, but followed up her declaration with an almighty blooper.

"It would be lovely for the home fans," she said. "And for us as well, to see a British winner of The Open.

"The Americans have been way too dominant recently in these Majors, haven't they?"

Twitter user @KaneClarke pointed out the error and said: "Shane Lowry is winning The Open so he's now British"

Barring a dramatic collapse, Lowry is well on his way to ensuring an American doesn't come out on top - but he won't be doing it for Britain.

He hails from Mullingar and currently lives in Clara, County Offaly and is now hot favourite to triumph on Sunday.

But, it's not the first time he's taken a four shot lead into the last 18 holes of a Major.

Lowry lead the 2016 US Open by the same margin on day four before fading away over the final round.
