Shane Lowry insists his focus is on winning the BMW PGA despite the intense pressure surrounding Ryder Cup selection.
However Lee Westwood, his playing partner over the first two rounds at Wentworth, says a review of the qualifying process should happen as he suggests that putting players under such pressure so close to the Whistling Straits showdown was not the best policy.
Lowry is in the final automatic place for Padraig Harrington's European team and a second round six-under par 66 to move within three shots of leader Laurie Canter will boost his chances of keeping that spot by Sunday evening.
The Clara man is in good shape for a captain's pick anyway but wants to nail down his place with a big performance on a course where he has performed very well in the past, and he was pleased to move onto eight-under this afternoon.
"Yeah, it's good, isn't it," he told Sky Sports. "Coming here with a little bit of pressure on me, I need to perform, I need to play well and I've done that the first two days.
"I'm pretty happy, to be honest. Yesterday I came off the golf course feeling like I probably should have shot lower that two-under and I know 66 is pretty good around here, but I probably could have shot a couple lower if I cleaned up a bit better.
"But six-under around Wentworth any day is pretty good and under the circumstances, yeah, pretty happy with that."
There are several outcomes still in play, one of which is that Lowry could overtake his friend Lee Westwood, who played alongside him over the first two rounds.
With a top 50 finish, Berndt Wiesberger could overtake either Lowry or Westwood, but the Austrian is in a battle this afternoon to make the cut.
"I'm trying to focus on my own game and I'm pretty happy with what I've shown," said Lowry.

"I want to make the team automatically, I think I've played some really good golf over the last few months to put my hand up for a pick if I do need one Sunday evening, but look, I just need to do my own thing over the weekend.
"I'm here to win the golf tournament, obviously I'm here to make the Ryder Cup team as well but I feel like this course, it doesn't owe me anything but I've had some great results around here and would love to win this tournament because it's just so big.
"It's our biggest event in Europe and I've been close to it a few times, it would be great to be standing on that 18th green on Sunday with the trophy."
Westwood, meanwhile, had to battle to make the cut on the back nine but recovered very well.
Asked if the pressure to secure qualification at Wentworth had affected him, the Ryder Cup veteran replied: "No, I'm here to try and play well in this tournament.
"I mean, it might still be under (pressure), I could still slide out now depending on what other people do.
"So that's the volatility of the week and the way the qualification has fallen.

"Whether you think it's right or wrong, whether you think people should be playing under that type of pressure to see what they're made of two weeks before the Ryder Cup, that's a personal call.
"Whether you think they shouldn't be playing under this much pressure this close to the Ryder Cup and should be kind of cruising into it and being ready to play in the Ryder Cup and energised and not be drained from a week like this, then that's another way of thinking.
"So I think the qualification maybe needs a bit of a look at for the next time we do the Ryder Cup in Rome."
