Shane Enright becomes latest Kerry player to retire from inter-county football

Shane Enright has joined Jonathan Lyne and Brian Kelly in announcing his retirement from Kerry duty.

The Tarbert defender, an All-Ireland winner in 2014, when he came off the bench in that year’s final against Donegal, said that lack of game time was a significant factor in his decision.

On the resumption of inter-county action at the back end of last year, Enright didn’t feature at all in the League games against Monaghan and Donegal or the subsequent Munster semi-final against Cork, when Kerry suffered a last gasp defeat.

Having clearly not been prominent in manager Peter Keane’s plans, his mind was effectively made up after the Cork game.

"I knew that was it,” Enright told The Kerryman. “I could tell from the way the two previous League games had gone. Between them two games and the Cork game, about 25 or 26 fellas saw some game time and I saw no game time, so I knew straight away that it was probably time to go then.

"Peter has his own men, the same as any manager, and I obviously wasn't one of them, this year anyway. It was frustrating, and for that reason I knew it was time to go. I was talking to Tommy Walsh on the way out and I said to him that that was probably it for me.

"I knew my time was up, but I suppose every player has to end their time at some stage. I've had my 10 years, and the main thing for me was that I was able to look myself in the mirror and to be happy and content with my lot. I've given it everything over the last 10 years, that's the main thing, and I can truly say that I did my best."

Along with his All-Ireland senior medal from 2014, Enright also won eight Munster titles, two National Leagues, provincial medals at minor and under-21 level as well as an All-Ireland under-21 crown in 2008.
