Shane Duffy's Celtic loan ended after miserable season for Republic of Ireland international

Shane Duffy’s Celtic nightmare is finally over after the club ended his loan deal early.

The Scottish Sun reports that the Ireland international has been sent back to parent club Brighton, despite Celtic still having league matches against St Johnstone and Hibs still to come.

The Hoops shelled out £2million to take Duffy on a season-long loan deal last summer as well as stumping up hefty wages last September after the 29-year-old fell out of favour at the Amex Stadium.

The defender started well by netting in his first two matches as Celtic kept five clean sheets in a run of seven wins on the bounce.

But it was all downhill from there as he struggled badly in a 2-0 Premiership defeat to eventual champions Rangers.

Duffy’s displays became costly on almost a weekly basis as he was exposed domestically and especially in Europe as Celtic crashed out of the Europa League after an embarrassing 4-1 home defeat to Sparta Prague.

Duffy also left the controversial January training trip to Dubai for personal reasons.

He hasn’t made an appearance in green and white since the middle of February in a 2-1 win over St Johnstone.

Duffy has two years left on his Brighton contract but is likely to leave the club and has been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest under previous boss Chris Hughton.
