Shane Duffy’s Celtic axe doesn’t solve defensive woes as pundit insists backline ‘panic’ remains

Former goalkeeper Alan Rough believes dropping Shane Duffy hasn't improved Celtic's defence after the performance against Motherwell.

The Ireland skipper has made a number of high-profile errors since his big-money loan move from Brighton last summer.

However, the costly mistake in the 2-1 defeat to St Mirren in Glasgow's east end seems to have been the final straw for boss Neil Lennon, with the 29-year-old having been replaced by academy graduate Stephen Welsh for he Hoops' last two games.

Despite the clean sheet against Kilmarnock and the win over the Steelmen, former Parkhead stopper Rough admitted he was shocked Duffy's switch hadn't worked out but insists that all the blame fell on loanee.

He told the PLZ Football Show: “I think we are all scratching our heads about how this hasn’t worked.

"We all seen the credentials of him as a club player and an international player more than anything else, but I can’t remember him having any particular game that he was a stand-out.

“On Saturday it was the same old story. 2-0 and coasting with loads and loads of chance and all of a sudden the goals go in.

“For the last 10 minutes it was just one big panic.”

Gaffer Lennon defended Duffy last weekend and backed the centre-back to "find his feet" at Celtic before the end of the campaign.

Following the win over 'Well, he said: “He will be massively disappointed because of the way he feels about the club.

"But there is still time for him to find his best form between now and the end of the season.”
