Shane Duffy leaves Celtic as £3m flop defender returns to Brighton early after nightmare season

Defender Shane Duffy has left Celtic early after a disastrous season, as the Irishman returns to Brighton.

The centre-back was highly touted when he joined on loan from the Premier League side in the summer, with the Parkhead club paying a reported £2million loan fee and wages of £30,000 per week.

A boyhood Celtic fan, Duffy was tempted north by the chance to seal 10 In A Row.

The 29-year-old struggled almost immediately though, with fans criticising his mobility and passing.

Though Duffy scored in each of his opening two games he was exposed against quick opponents, with his performance in the 4-1 home loss to Sparta Prague drawing particular flak.

The Ireland international has not played since February 14, and Record Sport understands he has now returned to Brighton.

Celtic have two games remaining this season but Duffy will not be involved as his loan spell comes to an early end.

It's understood he's picked up an injury that rules him out of the games against St Johnstone and Hibs.

Duffy has another two years remaining on his contract at Brighton but is not expected to have a future under Graham Potter.
