Shane Duffy clarifies Celtic Twitter message as he pays tribute to late father after Aberdeen success

Celtic defender Shane Duffy has explained a late night cryptic Twitter post was in remembrance to his late dad.

Duffy posted an inspirational quote on Sunday night after the Hoops sealed their path to the Scottish Cup Final with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen.

The 28-year-old tweeted: "Sometimes the bad things that happen in our lives put us directly on the path to the best things that will ever happen to us".

That prompted messages of support from many Celtic fans, with some believing the post referred to him turning a corner with a clean sheet against the Dons after below-par performances in recent weeks.

But the Ireland captain revealed the message was bigger than football.

Duffy's father, and fellow Celtic fan, passed away aged just 53 in May of this year, and that was the reasoning behind the social media message.

After a supporter told him to focus on Thursday's Europa League showdown against Sparta Prague, Duffy responded: "Correct big game Thursday. I’m on about losing my dad this year and everything what has happened to me as I said good win but we go on again Thursday."
