Shane Duffy Celtic switch backed to the hilt as Ireland partner blasts Gary Breen 'negativity'

John Egan has vigorously defended Republic of Ireland pal Shane Duffy over his move to Celtic.

The Hoops new boy was blasted by former Irish hero Gary Breen who reckoned he would pick up too many bad habits in Scotland.

He claimed the defender wasn't going to be up against anyone who would make life difficult and it would result in Duffy losing his place in Stephen Kenny's squad.

The new Republic of Ireland boss backed Duffy and his defensive partner is the latest to step up and send support his way after his loan move.

Egan started alongside Duffy in the two games in September and is likely to partner him in Slovakia in the playoff for the European Championship next month.

And he admits he keeps a close eye on Celtic and Scottish football and reckons Duffy is in a great place, both for himself and the national team.

He told the Irish Examiner: “I don't know where the negativity comes into things.

“It's all about playing football, trying to win games of football and doing well yourself.

“Celtic is a huge club, especially for Irish players, it's probably the most supported club around, so I think it's great for him.

“He's made an unbelievable start there, so his confidence is going to be sky-high. It's brilliant for him.

"They're fighting for 10 in a row, and playing European football, so I hope he does really well.

“I'd always keep an eye on Celtic, and I know Shane a long time, since we played underage for Ireland.

“It's great to try to form a partnership with him, and the more games we play together the better it'll get.”
