Shane Duffy 'begins Celtic talks' but club face competition from England

Celtic are believed to have begun talks with Shane Duffy and his club Brighton.

The 28-year-old is a Celtic fan and is keen on joining Neil Lennon's side.

Duffy has made 130 appearances for the English Premier League side since joining in 2016, but it appears his time with the Seagulls may soon be over.

According to Record Sport, Brighton will allow him to leave on loan for a £2m fee, but the likes of West Ham, West Brom, Leeds and Burnley are willing to pay more in order to secure a permanent move for Duffy.

They quote a source close to the talks as saying: “Shane has made it clear that he’s a massive Celtic supporter and that could make all the difference in terms of his decision.

"If he did choose Celtic then it would be more of a romantic notion rather than a financial decision.

Celtic are certainly part of the conversation but there is also a realisation that this will be a very difficult deal to do because it’s impossible to compete with the wages on offer in the English Premier League.”

The Irish defender has been capped 33 times by his country.

Neil Lennon's side return to action tomorrow night when they face KR Reykjavik in the Champions League first qualifying round.
