Fox announcer Shane Bacon failed to qualify for the 2019 U.S. Open Monday at sectionals held in Dallas.
Bacon, who finished 9-over 150, was one of 102 players at Bent Tree Country Club and Northwood Club competing for 10 spots to advance to the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links to be held June 13-16.
Mike Weir, 49, who won the Masters in 2003, made it into the field with a total of 136, five shots off the lead.
After Bacon’s opening 73 that included three birdies and five bogeys, he tweeted about the event’s first 18 holes.
“Not bad, not good this AM. 73,” Bacon wrote. “Couple of shaky chip shots around the greens. Wind is about to start howling. And hey, the bottled water is free!!”
Bacon struggled in the second round, shooting a 77 with two birdies, five bogeys and two double bogeys to finish T-72. He wrote on Twitter after playing 36 holes that the wind Monday “was brutal” but it was “so fun to be a part” of the sectional qualifying round.
Bacon advanced to the sectional round after shooting a 68 at Phoenix Country Club.
Brendon Todd and Nick Taylor finished T-1 at 10 under, two strokes ahead of Carlos Ortiz in third. Julian Etulain finished fourth at 6 under.
Scottie Scheffler, who competes on the Web.com Tour and is from Dallas, also advanced along with Oklahoma State’s Austin Eckroat.
