Shandon Park Golf Club alert sparked by suspicious object found under car

A security alert at a Belfast golf club was sparked by a suspicious object being found under a car, it has emerged.

It is understood the vehicle had been parked at Shandon Park Golf Club earlier on Saturday morning.

The club has been evacuated and a major event - the Vice Captain’s Day - cancelled. The police helicopter has been deployed in the area which is around half a mile from PSNI headquarters.

It is understood the object was found after the car’s arrival at the club, though where the object was prior to being found or when it was placed on or close to the vehicle remains unclear.

So far police have only said that they “are currently at the scene of a security alert at a golf club in Shandon Park in east Belfast following the discovery of a suspicious object in the area”.

They confirmed the golf club has been evacuated “as a precaution”.
